New York state investigators targeting systemic tax fraud have charged an upstate lawyer with tax evasion.
According to Department of Taxation and Finance officials, Rochester. N.Y., attorney Harvey Bunis, 61, has been charged with four felony counts of repeated failure to file personal income tax returns between 2002 and 2007. During that time, he earned a total of $350,000, working as a part-time prosecutor for the Monroe County district attorney's office and running a private law practice. He faces a maximum of four years behind bars.
Over the last three weeks, 17 others, including four attorneys, have been charged with tax evasion as a result of a joint probe between state officials and local district attorneys.
Bunis, who resigned from the prosecutor post in June 2009, could not be reached for comment.
